What is a Urogynecologist?

As a specialist in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, a urogynecologist comes equipped with the experience and certifications to meet the needs of women during various stages of life. From pelvic floor dysfunction and pain to urinary incontinence and reproductive organ issues, urogynecologists are trained within the sub-specialty of gynecology to best diagnose and treat these conditions. While the profession of urogynecology is new (approved in 2011 by the American Board of Medical Specialties), the training of urogynecologists has become common practice to meet the needs of women. Unsure if your condition warrants treatment from a urogynecologist? While it may be embarrassing to discuss, health concerns can arise if your conditions are not treated properly. A urogynecologist can give you peace of mind.

What Are Pelvic Floor Disorders?

  • A group of conditions that affect the pelvic floor.
  • The pelvic floor prevents organs such as bowel, bladder, uterus or vagina from falling down or out of your body.
  • Pelvic floor disorder is due to weakened pelvic muscles, connective tissues and ligaments.

Why Should You See a Urogynecologist?

The female pelvic floor is one of the most important parts of the body, as it houses the bladder, reproductive system, and rectum. A urogynecologist can handle a range of issues including overactive bladders, weak pelvic muscles, reproductive problems, and bladder or rectal incontinence. While not all issues require medications, some do. A urogynecologist can better assess symptoms, make a proper diagnosis, and develop a comprehensive treatment plan. Other treatment options include injections, vaginal pessaries, muscle therapy, and nerve stimulation. If you’re struggling with a pelvic floor disorder or have symptoms of one, contact our office to schedule a consultation with our urogynecologist. We’re proud to provide quality care to residents across Cape Cod, Boston, Plymouth, New Bedford, Wareham, Fall River, MA and the surrounding communities.
